Question:
Ok here's what is up... My girlfriend and I were making out and she wanted to have sex... She has been on the pill for five months, but recently missed about 5 days in a row.. she then got back on the pill after her period, and had been on the pill again for five days when this happened.. We didnt use a condom, but I pulled out well before climax... I read earlier that precum may contain sperm, but I distinctly remember urinating before we started making out. Also, i hadn't had an orgasm prior to this for at least 24 hours. After urination, is it still possible for sperm to be in precum? And did the pill help at all in this case?

Thanks for your question. I hope you will encourage your girlfriend to remember the pill every day, at the same time of day, if she is going to engage in intercourse. AND I really recommend that if you are going to engage in intercourse you wear a condom every time, so that you are well protected from that unplanned pregnancy as well.

It is hard to know whether there is a risk of pregnancy in your situation. When a woman doesn't stay on the pill, daily, regularly, it interrupts the ovulation process. Doctors recommend that a woman take the pill daily for a minimum of two weeks (preferably a month) to be absolutely sure that it is preventing the ovulation of the next egg (which is already being started during the woman's menstrual period). She may not have ovulated, the pills may have kicked in on time, and you probably didn't have any sperm in your pre-cum, ,BUT this is still risky behavior.

Pulling out certainly helps, and since there is not likely to be any sperm in the pre-cum as you described your behavior the last few hours prior to intercourse, you may be safe from that unplanned pregnancy. It is still risky behavior though if you don't want that accidental pregnancy.

I hope you will help each other be a little more careful next time, and you need to take care of yourself if your girlfriend is going to forget the pill. She may need to be on the patch or get the injection if she is going to have trouble remembering to take it. You might make these suggestions to her.

Thanks for writing and feel free to write again.
