Question:
I am 22 years old. I have been married for 4 months. I am currently battleing depression. I have been dealing with depression for 3 years. I was taking 20 mg of prozac every day. During this time I had no difficulty with lubrication or my sex drive. However, I have recently been taking 40 mg of prozac a day. (As per my Physician) After a couple of weeks with this new dosage I began to notice that my sex drive had decreased majorly. I have only been married for 4 months. I have been taking the new dose of prozac for about a month. This is having a very bad effect on my new marriage. We do talk about this, and we have a very open relationship. I am desperatly seeking some advice. Is there any anti-depression medicine that does not have such an effect on my sexual desire? Thank you in advance for answering my question. If you need further information please email me. I am willng to do anything to help my marriage.

Dear M: Loss of sex drive is not uncommon with depression. Taking prozac could indeed be a double whammy because, while helping your depression, it can also potentially cause loss of libido as well as difficulty with orgasm. Your husband needs to know that your loss of desire is not his fault. This situation can ofen be helped by changing to another similar medication or adding another medication (like Wellbutrin) to the Prozac. You need to try and see what Rx works best for you. Talk to your doctor. There is hope.
