Question:
I am a 41 yr. old female that has a low libido. My gyno put me on testosterone cream, and ran several tests, but the cream did not work. However, my SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) tests have all come back high. I was put on Synthriod for low thyroid two weeks before I noticed the drop in sexual desire, and that was Dec. of '94. Could the Synthriod affect my sex drive?

In recent years more and more gynecologist have been prescribing different forms of testosterone for their female patients suffering from low sexual desire. There are lots of mixed feelings among medical professionals about the effectiveness of these treatments. Thyroid hormones can increase the metabolism and clearance rates of many hormones and pharmacological agents including the sex steroid hormones. That is why it is not uncommon for women that suffer from thyroid dysfunction to have menstrual disturbances. It is possible that your low sexual drive is related to your thyroid condition. As the Synthroid you are taking may be causing an increase in the clearance of the sex hormones. That is also one possible reason why the testosterone cream did not work for you. These are issues that you should be discussing with both your gynecologists and the doctor that has prescribed the Synthroid for you.
