Question:
I am a 35-year-old female who has stopped experiencing any sexual desire. I started taking oral contraceptives 2 years ago and my libido gradually went away during that time. I have never experienced any sexual desire for my new boyfriend of 6 mo with whom I am in love, find him very attractive and my mind wants to have sex but my body refuses to feel anything. (I did not feel a desire for my ex-boyfriend either but found him very attractive). Times in my life when I could not wait to have sex with a man are still fresh in my mind. Until 2 years ago, I used to masturbate almost every night (could not wait) but never do it anymore. I exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet. Unfortunately, I have to continue oral contraceptives to control my flow since I was diagnosed with endometriosis 2 years ago. I suspect my problem is of a hormonal nature (there is also a history of thyroid gland problems in my family). Are there natural hormones/homeopathy I can take to start experiencing desire again? Do you believe in veromax, lady's Viagra, etc.? I heard there are estrogen/testosterone patches to help regulate hormonal levels. Is that advisable to do? If there is a type of specialist for my case - who would that be?

All indications are that oral contraceptives may have affected your sexual desire adversely, and because you have endometriosis, it is not possible to withdraw them. That's a catch 22 situation. If other hormonal problems (thyroid hormone deficiency) is contributing to your condition, you need to see an endocrinologist. He or she may also be able to recommend an ultra low dose oral contraceptive that may reduce your problem.Reviewed by: Patricia Fawver Ph.D. in Sexology
