Question:
Hi I am 41 and have 3 children 13, 10 and 8. After my son (8), I had my tubes tied. My fiance' and I have been talking about having a baby which I really want. We have a very health sex life (every other day). I would like to know what the chances are for my being able to have a baby? I have been getting sick every morning for the last 4 days and feel sick throughout the day. I have also been feeling extremely tired and although I had my period this month, it was not normal for me. It was very light and short. I normally have a heavy flow for at least one full day (24 hours) and my period lasts 3-5 days. This month it was only 2 days. Could it be possible that I am pregnant and how soon can I find out?

Well Missy, you can head over to the doctor's office right away and get tested by THEM at this point to see if your pregnant. You certainly are reporting pregnancy symptoms and yes, light bleeding, shortened period can definitely occur when a pregnancy is underway. If you do happen to be pregnant, it is best to find out sooner rather than later as the most crucial time for development in the fetus is the first 3 months of pregnancy. It is HIGHLY UNLIKELY to get pregnant when you have had your tubes tied, you should consider it a fluke. You also want to make sure you don't have an ectopic pregnancy, so again, it's important to go in right away. Ectopic pregnancy's can be life threatening and are more likely if one has had their tubes tied. If you aren't pregnant, I'm sorry to say that you are unlikely to get pregnant. People have to sign those consent forms that say your most likely not going to get pregnant if you get your tubes tied for a reason. You could undergo another operation to get them UNTIED, but it's risky as it's surgery, and it is not guarenteed to work as scar tissue makes it more likely for the egg to pass through the fallopian tubes. So, in recap. Pregnancy is unlikely with the tubes being tied. You are reporting symptoms of pregnancy though. Go to the doctor and get tested sooner rather than later. If you really wantto get pregnant, you can undergo ANOTHER operation to TRY and restore your fertility. And if it doesn't happen, enjoy the love and lovemaking you two are engaging in. If you love each other that much, congrat's! Sincerely, Megan Andelloux
