Question:
what is amenorrhea?

Answer:
by Scott Gross:
(06/18/2005)
Thanks for your question. According to www.dictionary.com, amenorrhea is the "abnormal supression or absence of menstrauation." Amenorrhea can happen to any woman of any age or cultural background, and there are many possible causes. However, some of the most common are from stress, excessive exercise, or medication. Any of these three items can cause a woman to temporarily stop having her period during the time of stress, exercise (note that in order for exercise to stop a woman's period it must be a truly excessive amount of exercise), or the time she's taking the medication. It is not a particularly dangerous condition over a short period of time, but a woman should consult a doctor if the cause of the stoppage of her period is unknown or if it lasts for a long time. Long term amenorrhea can cause some serious health issues for a woman over the long term because not having her period can really throw her hormonal rhythm off. I hope this answers your question, but if you have others please don't hesitate to ask them. Best of luck, Scott Gross
