Question:
My boyfriend and I started having sex about 5 months ago. He had a few partners from his past, and said he has been tested every 6 months, and he said that nothing has ever come up. Recently I have noticed like rough skin or bumps on my vaginal opening, but just on a small part. And it doesnt hurt at all, it jus feels like rough skin. I have no idea what it is, I've looked at pictures and it doesnt look like any of the STD's...could it be because of my birth control?

I am glad you wrote to us, and I hope that this answer is reaching you before you go to the doctor about your bacterial infection.
Actually, the rough skin that you feel may also be related to the infection that you have. It could also be an STD, such as genital warts.
You didn't mention if you have been using latex condoms with this boyfriend. Since he has had sex with prior partners it is very possible that he has an STD that HE doesn't even know about.
He says he was tested every six months, but I suspect he was tested for something like HIV which shows up in blood tests. Many STDs do not have symptoms or cannot be tested unless there are bumps, discharge or lesions and they are often hidden.
When you visit the doctor for the bacterial infection, ask to be tested for all STDs. You can tell the doctor that you want to be sure that you don't have anything that you could pass on to someone else.
You know that there is a slight risk that you could have something so you need to get checked now or there is the possibility that you could be unable to have children later, because many STDs don't show obvious signs, especially in women.
Get to that doctor! And also use condoms. Birth control works well for pregnancy prevention, but it does not protect against disease.Reviewed by: Patricia Fawver Ph.D. in Sexology
