Your girlfriend may just be experiencing hormonal changes as she matures. Seeing she has been on this type of pill for four years, she should have adjusted to its particular side effects in the first few months of taking it. Some side effects, such as the bleeding you are describing can be eliminated by changing the type of pill she is taking. It would be wise for her to visit her prescribing doctor to discuss the bleeding and see what they recommend to eliminate this side effect. Women will vary in their responses to the combinations of hormones in each pill, and it may just be time for her to switch to another combination. Again, this can be determined by the doctor. Another issue to consider is the dosing schedule; is she taking the pill every single day at about the same time each day? Sometimes, missed pills can cause breakthrough bleeding or bleeding irregularities. If she has missed any pills, make sure you use another contraceptive method during intercourse, such as a condom, in order to help prevent pregnancy. Changes in the hormone levels by missing pills can also increase the chance of pregnacy. Good luck!
