Question:
Hello,
I'm turning sixteen years old soon but I've always been extremely self-conscious about my body. I've always had hairy arms, somewhat dark hair on parts of my stomach and even hair around my nipples. I've been dying the hair because it bothers me so much but I was wondering if there's anything I could do that would be easier. I'm not sure if having hair in these areas is normal and it worries me. I'd feel uncomfortable going into a relationship with these problems. Thanks for your time

How much hair you have and its distribution depends on many things. Asians and africans have less hair than Caucasians, and pople from the mediteranean region have the most hairs. Usually there is nothing wrong apart from seeing it and feeling uncompfortable about it. Remove excess hair, and be persistent on it. If you have hair on your body, and around nipple, remove it constantly. A few hairs there are no problem, but you may get an unexpected reaction from a non understanding partener. You do not want this. If you have irregularities in your periods with excess hair, you will need to consult a gynecologist.
Editors note: Not to worry - there are many methods of hair removal to choose from these days. Have you considered laser, electrolysis, or waxing. Electrolysis is a permanent and can be especially helpful when you are removing a few hairs in a particular area. Laser can dramatically reduce the hair and sometimes will be permanent. It is also particularly effective on dark hair. Waxing is a temporary method, but over time, can really reduce the amount of hair as well as make the hair that does grow back softer and finer. Msny women (especially American women) have unwanted hair. Don't let it bother you - just investigate the different hair removal methods and take care of it. Just consider it maintenance - like anything else you do for your own personal grooming and hygiene. Reviewed by: Patricia Fawver Ph.D. in Sexology
