Is genital warts curable or not? If not, is the disease contagious when warts are NOT present? If pregnant will the child have genital warts when born?

Thank you for submitting your question. Genital warts are not curable - however, they are treatable. If you have an outbreak, there are medications and other surgical interventions that can treat the appearance of warts. But once you carry the virus that causes the warts, you have it always. Genital warts are spread during unprotected oral, anal, and vaginal sex through skin-to-skin contact with an infected partner. HPV (the virus that causes these warts) does change normal cervical cells. It is very important to go for a yearly Pap smear so that your doctor can make sure that any abnormal cells are treated quickly. As for pregnancy, genital warts can complicate a normal pregnancy. The warts may grow larger, your vagina can be obstructed by them during labor, and in some rare cases, an infant can develop warts. However, if you communicate frequently with your doctor and keep track of your sexual health, you will be able to take care of any situation that may arise.
