Question:
Thank You for providing such a wonderful service. I am 28 yo. Am dating this really wonderful girl and our relationship is getting really serious. Just 2 days ago we’ve decided to have sex and am really concerned about my girlfriend’s enormous vaginal discharge. I’ve been browsing the “sexual health” web site and found almost similar questions posted concerning vaginal discharge but no specific answers that suite my girlfriend’s case. What I really need to know if this is a normal thing to be happening. I mean, I have been in many previous relationships but never saw such amounts of fluids coming out of a girl, and to be honest I freaked out! I asked her if it’s always been like this and she said yes. So I guess it’s the nature of her body?! And am not talking about one time discharge here! The rate was something like one time per 3 minutes or something and the fluids had a colour not to mention the smell! It has been a long time since her last relation ship – 2 years actually. She’s 28 years old and looks very healthy to me. Should we be consulting a doctor about this thing? Again is it normal that she is like this or we are just missing something here! Please advise! Thank You very much!

Dear Sir, Thank you for your consultation request. Normally, the vagina has a minimum amount of discharge. With sexual excitment, an increased vaginal lubrication is as natural as an erection in the male. How much the discharge to be considered normal is difficult to say. As your girl frind says she has always been like this, well, I think she will consider this normal. You mentioned things about colour and smell, but actually did not mention details. Normal discharges are thin white, rarely with a faint yellow tinge, and with a charecteristic smell. If you (or your girlfriend) think this smell or color is abnormal, a visit to the doctor will be reassuring to both of you. Editors Note: Another possibility to consider is that she is experiencing female ejaculation. If so, this is normal for some women and a pleasure to be enjoyed. You can read more about this aspect of female sexual response on this website or articles written by Bev Whipple. Patricia Fawver, Ph.D., editor
