Answer: by Brian Zamboni: (08/12/2006)
There is a long list of physiological factors that can influence erections, but there is little data to support the specific prevalence of any one causal factor. The most common physiological factors include medications, health status, and advancing age. Other physiological etiological factors include diabetes mellitus, heart disease, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, traumatic injury, surgical complications, cigarette smoking, and drug/alcohol use.
Non-medical causes of erection problems include socio-cultural influences, psychosexual trauma, sexual skills or techniques, emotional factors, relationship problems, psychological conflicts, performance anxiety, irrational beliefs, intimacy dysfunction, and sexual attitudes and knowledge.
In your case, it is difficult to get more specific about what might be going on because I do not have enough information. Stress from school, work, or your interpersonal relationships may be a factor. Keep in mind that our sexual functioning changes over time and the problems you are experiencing may be temporary. I suggest that you get a general check-up from a medical doctor to check your cardiovascular health. Also, I suggest you see a qualified sex therapist for a complete evaluation.
