Question:
I have recently been seperated and divorcing this month after I have been with my wife 4 yrs married, 4 yrs before that courting. So its been a while since I have been single.
Recently I have started dating, and it seems each date I have been on ends in a kiss. To me this is weird, back as a teenager dating, that just didnt happen. Anyways, I am not trying to hop into bed with anyone, but I walk away happy I just kissed someone, but still concerned that I might "get" something. I have made sure they didnt have any visable cold sores, etc. and understand that, but I am more worried about STDs that could be much more serious like HIV and AIDs. I read somewhere on the site that only if there is visable blood in her mouth (say flossing etc) that it could happen, is there anything that can be transmitted via siliva (aside of herpes and a cold or something like that.)
Basically I am simply worried about kissing my date when I am done for the evenning, it amazes me when I was doing this before I got married, I couldnt care less about kissing. Now adays I seem more paranoid, although I keep doing it anyway.
Thank You

If you mean an open-mouth or “wet” kiss, there are not many possibilities to be concerned about just from the saliva. Kissing can transmit Herpes Simplex 1 and 2, even if no herpes blisters are visible. If the other person has syphilis sores on or in their mouth there is a risk of getting syphilis. And in theory, cytomegalovirus (CMV) could also be transmitted by kissing. Thing is, about half of us have CMV already. It becomes a problem if the immune system is compromised, as in HIV infection.
As you already read, the only way HIV could be transmitted by kissing is if visible blood is present. Plain saliva is just not the way this virus gets around.
