Question:
My 14 year old son is trying stuff on his younger sisters. His mother and I are divorced, and we are both re-married with families of our own. He lives with his mother, and i get him every other weekend. about six months ago he got in trouble at his home trying stuff with his 10 year old sister. both families had long talks with him about why this is wrong, and we thought things were under control. now this week-end at my home, he was caught trying stuff with my 9 year old daughter. right now he is not really welcomed at either home, and we don't know what to do. do you have any advice? i would really appreciate a e-mail response if possible. Thank you for your help. This is a big problem - i love my son, but i don't want anything to happen to my daughters.

Your 14 year old son has a serious problem and needs help. This kind of behavior requires professional intervention. It's not enough to sit down with him and tell him to stop. Regardless of their good intentions, people who suffer from compulsive sexual thoughts and behaviors are usually unable to keep their promises. Your son needs to get in to see a child psychologist or clinical social worker who specializes in counseling teen sexual offenders. His victims and all the family members could benefit from counseling, as well. Though you need to set limits on where your son lives, don't reject him altogether. He, as well as your daughters, need your help with understanding what happened, reestablishing safety and trust, and long-term healing. Wendy Maltz MSW
