Question:
I'm an aide for a 37 year old man with severe CP. He uses a head-controlled wheelchair, and has very limited mobility in his arms, with no control over his hands. He has a periodic sexual partner who will masturbate him, but is looking for some way to do it himself. We've looked at sex toys, but the ones he was interested in using (i.e. surrogate mouths or vaginas) were too heavy to be used without assistance.
I've been reading your suggestions, and you refer to many of the participants in your study becoming creative in their masturbation methods. How can we find out what methods have worked for other people? My friend really needs specifics, and doesn't have any friends in town with CP to ask. Any ideas?

A: I agree that you need specifics. You should remember though that cp. is so varied that what works for one person may not work for another. Yet, I think the issue is to be given creative ideas that one can try or adjust to one's own degree of physical flexibility. Can your friend move his pelvis at all? One method used by one of the men I interviewed who had very limited bodily control was to have his PA insert an X-rated video in his VCR and then have a rough towel placed in his bed, which he would lie on and rub his penis up against before falling asleep (he had a switch to turn off the TV that he could hit with his body on the wall which was up against his bed). This of course may or may not work for your friend. But without the use of hands, rubbing against some preferably rough surface has worked for several of the men. If you give me more specifics about your friends bodily control/movement, there may be other suggestions that fit. As far as I know there is no listserv specifically devoted to issues of this kind for people with cp. This would obviously be of benefit to many people. What I will do is put the word out that there is this need and see if there are enough people who would like to discuss masturbatory techniques on-line. Stay tuned, or send me further details or comments.
Good luck,
