Question:
Hello, I am a mentor for a 15 year old young man with the ausburger form of autism. He is a very bright young man. Recently he has become aware of body image and the social aspects of dating and relating to the opposite sex. He has asked me many questions regarding what is normal sexual development and how can he relate to and make himself more attractive to girls. He has obsessive-compulsive disorder as an aspect of his autism. Where can I find appropriate information about body image and sexual development which takes his dissability into account?

He is hungry for information. Have a look on Amazon, there are a large number of good books available. If you need some help with titles, mail me the ones you are not sure about and I'll check them for you.

On top of that info, answer his questions as factually and simply as you can. On top of basic information about normal social interaction make sure he understands two other very important points.

One is the big difference between public and private - this concept in very important for masturbation and other private activities. He also needs to understand what levels of social touching is allowable in your inner circle, and in social circles he mixes in. Inappropriate touching can cause a great deal of grief if not understood.

Any tips you can also give him about non-verbal body language will also stand him in good stead. Feel free to write again if you have any further questions.

Best Wishes,

Melissa BEE
