Hi, My girlfriend just found out she has HPV. I am fairly certain i have it to because w have had unprotected sex because she is on the pill and hasn't been vary active sexually. She has had 2 other besides me and worn condoms with the others since she wasn't on the pill with them. she has been my first and only partner. What I'm wondering is how do i know for sure if i have it and is there any treatments for it. also Will i have the same type as her if i do and how will i know if it will cause warts or not? please and thank you.

These are excellent questions to be asking. HPV is an interesting virus and there is some evidence to support that it is not always transmitted through sexual intercourse. Some, who have not ever had intercourse, will be diagnosed with having the virus. Some, though they have been exposed to it, never have symptoms such as warts. Even though your girlfriend used condoms with her other two partners, it does not mean that she was protected against HPV. Viruses can be on the scrotum of the male and be passed to the labia of the female by passing the condom. It is possible that you have the virus as well. You didn’t tell me how your girlfriend found out, but I am assuming that she had a Pap test that indicated she had some irregular cells. They then tested those cells and found the virus. Since there is not a Pap test for men screening for HPV is a little different. One thing you could do is go to the county health clinic where you live, where they do screening for sexually transmitted infections. You would tell them that you have been exposed to HPV and would like to know how you might know if you now have the virus. The doctor who diagnosed your girlfriend could also give her information about what is suggested for her present partner. The best solutions are suggested by the web sites that I have included below. I suggest you visit all three and I think they will be of help to you. As you know, some viruses cause warts and others do not. Warts can look like flat spots, as well as what you think are classic looking warts. Sometimes they will show up if you take a cotton ball with vinegar (acetic acid) and swab your genitals. If there is HPV present it will show up as white spots. I’ve provided some websites where you can go to get even more information and suggestions on how to get help. I think you will find there are many resources for helping you with HPV, including what you might do to prevent getting them from your girlfriend. http://www3.niaid.nih.gov/healthscience/healthtopics/human_papillomavirus http://www.cdc.gov/std/HPV/STDFact-HPV-and-men.htm http://www.webmd.com/sexual-conditions/hpv-genital-warts/physical-examination-for-genital-warts-human-papillomavirus-for-men
