Virginity is defined in different ways by different people. When someone is in a relationship with someone of a different gender, the end of virginity is usually marked by penis-vagina intercourse. Not everyone defines virginity in that way, however. For example, people who are in a same-gender relationship do not have penis-vagina intercourse, but do not see themselves as virgins. In addition, people who have been raped may still see themselves as virgins until they have been with someone who they consented to be with. Virginity is seen as a valued status in some cultures, and an antiquated concept in others. It may be appreciated in people of one gender, and ridiculed in people of another gender.
