Disability and Illness: Spina Bifida / Myelomeningocele

Spina Bifida / Myelomeningocele Introduction:
Spina bifida is categorically a developmental disability. Public Law 94-103 states that a developmental disability is a physical or mental impairment resulting in limitations of major life activities. A developmental disability is manifested before the age of 22 years and is likely to continue. That categorization, by itself, is of little use for planning and implementing developmentally appropriate sexual health interventions, since people born with developmental disabilities have a wide range of physical and mental abilities. A thorough understanding of the medical aspects of a specific disability--in this case, myelomeningocele--and the resultant impact on psychosocial development is required before an effective sexual health intervention can be designed or implimented.
